Punching (sheet metal)

Punching is a metalworking process for sheet metal. Punching comprises a punch, a die and a punching press. The die has a hole or shape similar to that required on the sheet. The punch is slightly smaller than the cavity in the die to prevent play and breakage during punching. During the punching process, the sheet is placed over the die and the punch is pressed into it by the punching press. This creates a recess in the sheet metal. Punching is mainly used for large quantities, where it is very economical. Laser cutting or water jet cutting is usually used for small quantities.
